[BUY THE SHIRT HERE]
Wil and I have been toying with doing a Sparks McGee shirt design for a while now. If you are uninitiated with Acting Ensign McGee, then read Wil’s blog post here and check out Sparks’s Awesome Adventures here. I know it just cracks Wil up to an unhealthy extent that this weird little forum exchange he dug up from years ago has transformed into a full fledged meme with cosplay and crafts and comics and fan art. It seems high time that we finally added something to the Spark McGeeniverse.
“Number One, where the devil is Sparks Mcgee?”
I decided to take some of my most popular comic convention prints and turn them into t-shirts. Why should your walls have all the fun? Let your torso get in on the action!
Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey, Rival Smugglers and Might Club!
Did you guys know that you can put lists of things written in Helvetica on black T-shirts? You totally can! Wil came up with this “Initiative & Attack & Damage & Save” shirt idea based on some sort of gaming activity he is quite fond of. Pyramids and Pythons? Obelisks and Ostriches? Caverns and Cave Trolls? No, no… It’s something with dragons. Dragons and Dining Rooms? I’m sure it will come to me. But if you partake in the dark dice arts, feel free to proudly display your enthusiasm with this shirt.
As long as we were putting words on shirts in certain fonts I figured, “Maybe I should be the one making lists! Yeah, me! I have list making abilities too! Hey, Wil sure has been in a lot of stuff: movies, TV, that Internet all the kids are always talking about. ” Of course, in my attempt to shift the focus back to me I chose to make a list about Wil… yeah, I need to plan these things out better. ~Joel
I got an email from Wil Wheaton a couple of weeks ago with the subject line “I have an idea…” A dozen or so emails back and forth, a few rough concept drawings and a bit of photoshoppery on my part and BLAMO! We have a new shirt design that expresses both an affinity for The Doctor and a basic acceptance of sports and the attire that is generally associated with… tennis? Footbasket? Basehoops! I know Wil like’s hockey. It must be a thing about hockey points.
Wil’s approach to creating… stuff is a shining example of the geek motto, “Get Excited and Make Things.” He has an idea, he gets giddy (literally giddy… bouncy, giggly, the whole situation), and he finds a way to bring that idea into meatspace. In this case, I was the conduit through which the idea was made solid, and for that I am honored (and quite giddy in my own right… still vibrating a bit, actually). I hope you guys dig the shirt (it is both timey-wimey AND spacey-wacey) and find a reason to get excited and make something of your own.

As I write this I have been working for about 15 hours straight trying to get this site up and running. As of right now it’s still in its infancy, so please forgive anything that is ugly or broken. The layout, the styling, everything is FAR from done, but at least now it seems to be functional and I feel confident leaving it alone for a few hours while I get some sleep.
So what’s Sharksplode for? You may know that I make an online comic called HijiNKS ENSUE, and you may also know that I sell t-shirts based on some of the comics I have made. What you may not know is that I have roughtly 10 new t-shirt ideas a week, and most of them never see the light of day. The process of designing, ordering, shipping, warehousing and interneting a new shirt can take weeks if not months. It’s just the nature of dealing with 3 or 4 different entities and producing a LOT of a product that may or may not ever sell. That last part is the real killer. The risk. It’s hard to take a risk on a silly idea for a shirt if maybe only 8 people are going to get the joke and buy the shirt.
I realized what I needed was a way to produce a lot of shirt ideas quickly, in small amounts and with little to no risk. I’ve spent the last few months developing the method by which I hope to accomplish this and I think its going to… sort of work. Whenever I have a T-shirt idea that might not appeal to 1000 people and thus not warrant an entire print run, I will put them on Sharksplode. I will use this site as a sort of T-shirt proving ground. If a design takes off I might move it over to my regular store, or start taking it to conventions. The end result is you get more options and more opportunities to wear something that will make normals stare at you like… like you’re wearing a shirt they don’t understand. I have been working with a printer for the last few years that I trust and they will be printing the shirts and fulfilling the orders. I am extremely excited for this new aspect of The Experiment and I hope you will help me make it a success.
oh…. uh… go buy a shirt… please.
